Dominica

Firstly, lets start off with what Dominica isn't. It's not the Dominican Republic and it's not your cliché Caribbean island. Consider it Costa Rica of the Caribbean, at least in my eyes. There is no other island in this sector that remotely resembles the sheer topography wow factor that Dominica possesses. This mountainous paradise is mostly volcanic and has very few manicured beaches therefore tourism has developed rather slowly. It has a dense rain forest, freshwater lakes, hot springs and jaw dropping waterfalls – I'm talkin' national geographic status! I managed to capture some shaky amateurish video of an uncharted black sand beach not even the locals or taxi drivers know about. We tend, I think, to romanticize poverty when it's surrounded by natural beauty. It's a country that's proud of it's indigenous population, its lifestyle make its people some of the happiest in the world from what I gather. Barely scraping by on banana, aloe and soap exports this impoverished country welcomes the true eco-tourists who come to gape. Despite Dominica being a very underdeveloped island not always preferable for the average traveler, I do plan on revisiting to spend more time exploring the hidden gems for your post viewing pleasure.

Yes, very confusing lol. I can speak Spanish but not Creole. I’m actually
visiting Dominica this August for the first time. Very excited.

    • nice. hope u enjoy it

+imminae Do you have trouble explaining to people? Lol a lot of people
don’t know Dominica because it’s so small

    • +Karen Ramirez Its very difficult! I’m frequently asked “whats the
difference” and if it’s similar to the North and South Korea divide lol.
it’s only a problem for the people who don’t know anything about the
Caribbean except from Jamaica, the people who are from the caribbean know
      the difference.

the conversation usually plays out like this:
them: where are you from/what are you?
      me: oh, i’m dominican
      them: ahh, dominican republic?
      me, yeah, and dominica.
      them: there’s two?
At this point I have to explain the difference lol

I used to live on St. Thomas. I went to Dominica to vacation. It is so
breathtakingly beautiful — truly the Garden of Eden. I hope to get a place
there and do something to contribute to the community.

I love Dominica and would go back any time. Dominica is my favorite place
    to go.

  10. Thanks for posting this video. This IS the most beautiful place on earth!
I’m not just saying that because I’m Dominican either, nothing can compare
to Dominica’s beauty and splendor. I muted the soundtrack and listened to
traditional Dominican music, and it took me back, felt like I was there
    again.

  11. Dude, the Carib Indians did not name the island Dominica. It is Waitikubuli
